What is a Unit at Purdue Global?

A Unit is the building block of a course. It groups the reading, the discussion board and the assignments for one segment of the term, and a course runs through a numbered sequence of them inside Brightspace. It is not a credit, and it is not quite a week either — it is a chunk of the syllabus.

Where you meet it

Purdue Global teaches on Brightspace, the platform built by D2L. Course material sits under the Content tab, stacked down the left-hand navigation, and you click a Unit to expand everything inside it. Most of your term is spent moving between a Unit's content, its discussion board and the gradebook.

Why the word matters

Because every online school names this differently, and the name tells you something about how the school thinks.

  • Purdue Global: Units. Content-shaped. The syllabus is divided into topics.
  • Walden: weeks. Calendar-shaped. The course is divided by time.
  • Capella FlexPath: assessments. Deliverable-shaped. The course is divided by what you hand in.
  • WGU: competency units. A different thing entirely — a measure of workload, not a chunk of syllabus. Do not let the shared word confuse you when comparing.

That last one causes real trouble in comparisons. A WGU competency unit and a Purdue Global Unit share a word and nothing else.

What sits inside a Unit

Typically the readings and media for that topic, a discussion board where the participation grade is earned, and one or more assignments. Alongside the Units, courses run Seminars — live scheduled sessions with the instructor, recorded for anyone who cannot attend.

The bit that catches people out

Working through a Unit's material is not the same as being recorded as present. Attendance at Purdue Global updates when you submit something graded. Reading the Unit and watching its Seminar leaves the attendance record empty, and empty records have deadlines attached to them.

So the practical rule for a new term is simple: open the Unit, and post in its discussion board early. That single action starts your attendance record and removes the risk entirely.

Is a Unit the same as a week?

Not exactly. Units divide the syllabus by topic rather than by calendar, though they often run roughly weekly.

Is a Purdue Global Unit the same as a WGU competency unit?

No. A WGU competency unit measures workload; a Purdue Global Unit is a section of course content.

What platform hosts the Units?

Brightspace, made by D2L. Course material lives under the Content tab.
